Overview

AAA Asphlat is an Australian owned business based in Lonsdale, South Australia. The business has grown from a small patching operation into a major bitumen contractor and independent asphalt manufacturer servicing commercial, residential, and government clients. They specialise in major road construction, car parks, residential driveways, and maintenance repairs.

The Challenge

AAA Asphalt's production facility operates entirely off-grid. Prior to this project, the site relied solely on diesel generators to power its asphalt plant, a costly and operationally intensive arrangement. Rising fuel costs and the burden of running large generators made this unsustainable.

Their primary goals were clear:

  1. Reduce energy costs associated with diesel generators
  2. Achieve energy independence
  3. Maintain operational reliability required to run a production facility without interruption

The Solution

Power Tech Energy designed a complete off-grid solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) purpose-built for the demands of an industrial production site.

Installed specs

- 99.96 kWp Rooftop Solar System (Stage I)

- 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

- Remote Monitoring and Control

The solar array charges the BESS through daylight hours and powers the plant directly, while a small diesel generator runs as backup during high-demand periods or extended periods of low sunlight.

A key design priority was the complete elimination of the site's large primary diesel generator. Remote monitoring and control gives both Power Tech Energy and the AAA Asphalt team full visibility over system performance and energy flows from offsite.

Outcome

The site now runs on solar and battery storage, with the BESS carrying the production load through the day and into the evening while minimising exposure to fluctuating diesel prices.

Key outcomes achieved:

•       Site now running mostly on solar and BESS during normal operations

•       Reduced dependency on diesel generators

•       Ongoing remote monitoring and control, ensuring system reliability

•       Energy independence for an off-grid industrial production facility
